Johan Jeremiassen established PORSGRUNDS Porselaensfabrik AS in 1885. The factory took two years to build, and on February 10th 1887, the first firing operation took place. This well-known factory is idyllically located on the west bank of the Porsgrunn River and looks the same today as it did over 100 years ago. PORSGRUND is Norway’s only producer of feldspar porcelain. The factory has enjoyed continuous production since 1887 and in fact still uses the same original "recipes" for all of its products, using a wide assortment of porcelain products ranging from fireproof goods destined for professional kitchens, to exquisite, fine porcelain for the home. PORSGRUND is the main producer of porcelain flatware and products for the Royal family, and has been so for three generations.
In PORSGRUND's production one can see the century's history and many norwegian artists have been shown. Artists like Thorolf Holmboe, Theodor Kittelsen, Gerhard Munthe, Nora Gulbrandsen, Tias Eckhoff, Konrad Galaaen, Victoria Berge, Odd Nerdrum, Jakob Weidemann, Frans Widerberg, Ferdinand Finne ... are some of the many who have been engaged by PORSGRUND over the years. |

Generations of Quality An investment in a new porcelain service is an investment for life. It should be a service that you are comfortable with and it is important to remember that a dinner and/or coffee service may become a valuable heirloom for future generations. Quality and a sustainable design are, therefore, the most imortant reasons for investing in PORSGRUND services.
PORSGRUND's porcelain has a unique whiteness and transparency that can only be obtained by the use of the purest whiteburning kaolines. The firing is done in an atmosphere short of oxygen in order to produce whiteness in the material. We burn it as high as 1400 degrees centigrade. The surface becomes shiny, smooth, hard and will never split from the porcelain. PORSGRUND's porcelain is only made from natural material. Bone porcelain is transparent porcelain, made from whiteburning clay, feldspar, quartz and bone ashes. The bone porcelain glaze melts at a lower temperature.

Product Care
Washing Dishes Porsgrund's porcelain can be washed in a dishwasher. But dishwater soap, the quality of the water and heat can, over time, result in damage to the decorations. Therefore a correct dishwater detergent and amount is important to keep your service in good shape for a long time. Be extra careful with the washing of thin porcelain service. Washing with mild soap is recommended.
Service with gold and platinum are extra sensitive products. Wash these by hand or use the delicate setting in the dishwasher.
Microwave Porsgrund's porcelain can be used in the microwave, except for porcelain products with gold or platinum - these should never be used in the microwave.
Oven Porsgrund's porcelain is ovenproof and can be used in regular ovens. However, never place cold porcelain in a warm oven. Porcelain is sensitive to thermal shock and could crack. Be careful with porcelain products with gold or platinum.
Cutlery The glazing hotly fired porcelain has glass and therefore is very resistant to wear and tear. However, it is important to be aware that certain types of cutlery can be scratched by steel in the glazing. This applies to certain types of knives, like steak knives, with serrated edges. These can "puncture" the glazing and cause scratches. Knives made of soft steel can also leave a mark on the glazing.
The best knives are made of hardened chrome steel without nickel additives.
